Homeward by Duy Quang Mai
Over the course of 2018, a select group of young writers was invited to take part in an inaugural poetry writing program at the Story Factory. Their goal was to produce not just a a story, or a script, but a fully realised chapbook. This is one of the final collections produced in these workshops.
Duy Quang Mai is 16 years old.
In this chapbook, Duy Quang has tried to build a threshold that leads to the questions of belonging, internal loss and coming-of-age identity. Each page is tender, sometimes cutting with confessions. But all combined, will hopefully beat your way somewhere soft with light. These poems encase several types of homes, the physical ones, the rib-shed ones. To read them is easy.
You just have to turn the doorknobs. Then enter.
